Garden Room
As it were when we were children in a den, having a separate outside space as an Office, Art Studio or Garden room creates separation from the main home and freedom to think.
Retreat
Built around the huge picture window and with insulation thicker than most homes, the space was designed to maximise light and space.
All Year Round
In conjunction with think insulation came the use of the overhanging roof. This aids shading from the overhead glaring summer sun through the large picture window yet allows the warmth from the lower sun path during winter months.

What is The Exterior Wood?
This exquisite and warm textured material is Larch. It is a rather heavily resigned wood with plenty of sticky sap ingrained to help protect it over the coming years.
Why is the wood scorched?
The technique is called Yakisugi (Shou Sugi Ban) which translates as Burned Cedar. The process of scorching was used in Japan before wood treatment was available. A natural preservative without chemicals.
Why did you build the space?
I am rather lucky that as an IT worker i do a great deal of work from home. I also edit and record voice overs so i needed a dedicated space. Claire has over the last 6 years developed both her Ceramics and textiles skills and needed a place for her to expand into.
Will there be any videos on items produced in the studio?
There are some short video clips available on Claires own Instagram site. We keep our hobbies separated.
